Motivational Speeches

Having watched the speech from Any Given Sunday in class the other day, I have decided to make a list of  some of the best motivational speeches both from movies, and in real life.

Miracle-
This is one of the best speeches to watch, for both hockey and non hockey fans. Herb Brooks (played by Kurt Russel) talks about how expectations and predictions should be thrown aside before a game. He also talks about how if they play up to their full potential, and play their style of hockey, the will beat any team put in front of them.

The Pursuit of Happiness-
Although it is a shorter speech, Chris Gardner (played by Will Smith) gets a very good point across to his son. He tells him not to every let anyone shoot down his dreams, and that if he wants something, to go get it.

Armageddon-
There isn't much I can do to sum up this speech, it is defiantly one that is worth checking out though. Hopefully in our time we will never have to listen to a speech like this from the President, but it is the perfect speech for the situation.

  1. First off, I absolutely love the movie Miracle! I'm so glad that you included that clip in your post! I think it's such an inspirational movie that gives everyone a sense of pride in America; we need that today, most people are turning against the U.S. I haven't seen the other two movies, but you have definitely convinced me to see them!

I did my post on motivational speeches as well, except mine was only on The Legend of Bagger Vance. If you liked these movies, you'll definitely like that one too. You should check it out!

  2. To Halle: You have to see The Pursuit Of Happiness and Armageddon, they are great movies.

To Alex: Thanks for pulling these clips together for us, they really are some great motivational speeches. But I was wondering (and I wouldn’t fault you if you did) if you googled “the best motivational speeches” or something like that or did you just come up with them off the top of your head because that would be impressive.

  3. Sierra, Miracle and Pursuit of Happiness were my own, and while on youtube I saw the link to the Armageddon one, and thought it was very good so I posted it. There are many more that I would have liked to have posted, but I didn't feel like boring all of you with dramatic football speeches.

  4. Nice blog idea, Alex! The Herb Brooks speech is awesome, and I debated whether to show that or the Pacino speech from Any Given Sunday. Great use of hyperlinks in your post, as well.

Another of my favorites is Aragorn's speech before the final battle in The Return of the King. I actually often use it in my AP Composition class.

  5. Well out of these three, I haven't seen the movie Armageddon, but it looks good. I have seen the movie Miracle and the Pursuit of Happyness and I loved them. They both had very motivational scenes.

Also, putting the movie clips in your blog made it a lot more interesting. Good job tying in other movies to what we've done in class.
